The Dutch manager, wearing a sharp blue blazer and clutching a bottle-shaped present, arrived early at the Wing's Chinese restaurant in Manchester city centre with wife Truus.
Van Gaal looked to be in good spirits, heartened no doubt by United's positive performance in Monday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea which kept him in a job.

On-loan Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli made an intriguing pledge to 'make a nice video with fireworks' for his fans before the end of 2015.
In an Instagram clip filmed while the Italian was stuck in traffic, Balotelli also urged his followers to be careful with pyrotechnics and also expressed his desire for the year to be over as quickly as possible.
Back in 2011, Balotelli caused £400,000 worth of damage to a mansion in Manchester he was renting when one of his friends set off fireworks in the bathroom.
Barcelona star Neymar was out with a group of friends to celebrate the end of the year
In the video, he said: 'Tonight, I will make you a nice video with fireworks. I'm just stuck in traffic but, yeah, be careful with fireworks and I will wish you the best New Year's ever, because this year has been shhh - you know what.'
Balotelli will be forgiven for wanting to see the back of a year in which he failed to make an impression at Liverpool and then suffered a groin injury just a month into a loan spell at Milan.
