Rare Lionel Messi archive footage shows Barcelona star tearing Espanyol apart in spectacular fashion. Messi was still a 17-year-old

If we were to compile a clip of all his greatest moments out on the pitch, Leo would surely have the most exhilarating highlights reel of all time. He's always had an eye for the truly spectacular.
Even when he was barely old enough to drive.
Back in the 2004/05 campaign, Messi was still a 17-year-old youth prospect with Barcelona B ; though he would make his senior debut that season, his career was at its most delicate, formative stage. Nonetheless, the little Argentine was producing jaw-dropping displays for Barca's reserve side.

Take this showing against Catalan rivals Espanyol , for instance - it's an absolute joy to watch.

Lionel Messi celebrates scoring for Barcelona against Albacete at the Camp Nou stadium on 1 May, 2005
Messi was always destined for greatness

Barca have just shared this rare archive footage from their 2004/05 B-team derby clash with The Blanquiazules. As you can see above, Messi runs the show from start to finish.
With a series of mesmeric, mazy runs and trademark dribbles (as well as a goal and an assist), teenage Messi humiliates his opponents over and over again.

No change there then. Beautiful stuff, Leo.

Malaga 1-2 Barcelona: 5 things we learned as Lionel Messi grabs brilliant winner

Ed Malyon was at La Rosaleda as Barca looked to go top of La Liga

Lionel Messi scored the winner as Barcelona overcame a scare to beat Malaga 2-1 at La Rosaleda.
The Argentine popped up with an acrobatic volley from close range to settle a tight encounter on the Costa del Sol, with Barca second-best for much of the first half.
But Luis Enrique's decision to haul off the struggling Thomas Vermaelen helped turn the game around.
Munir had put the visitors in front after a minute but Malaga's energetic pressing soon put them in control of the game as an unfamiliar Barcelona back five made errors aplenty.
The hosts got a deserved equaliser when Juanpi capitalised on one of those mistakes, but Messi's second-half strike knocked the wind out of Javi Gracia's men and condemned them to defeat - sending Barca top.
But what did we learn? Ed Malyon was there:

1. “Keep it tight” doesn’t always work

Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno
First blood: Munir taps home after 63 seconds

Malaga boss Javi Gracia had said pre-match that he wanted to frustrate Barcelona and all the pre-match indications were that the in-form hosts could cause a Neymar-less Barca some problems.
Instead, Gracia had barely finished saying “keep it tight, lads” (in Spanish of course) when Munir put the visitors in front after 63 seconds.
Lionel Messi played Luis Suarez in behind, the Uruguayan tiptoed past a defender to the byline and squared for Munir, who tapped into a vacant net from a yard.
Change of plan, Javi.

2. Malaga press causes problems

A poor start gave way to hope as Malaga proceeded to cause problems for Barcelona’s slightly makeshift back five.
It began as a couple of mistakes from visiting defenders putting them in trouble, but they continued.. and continued.. and it became clear the Barca defence was struggling under the pressure from Charles, Juanpi and Duje Cop.
In no time at all, Barcelona had completely surrendered control of the game and were so accident-prone that you felt they were capable of setting themselves alight in the process of doing something as simple as passing the ball along their backline.

Adriano vies with Roberto Jose Rosales
Under pressure: Adriano vies with Roberto Jose Rosales

On several occasions Javier Mascherano was there to save the day, including one remarkable recovering challenge on Charles (following a Vermaelen shocker) that was somehow so good the striker was booked for diving.
But Mascherano, tired of putting out everyone else’s fires, soon got burnt himself and this time Malaga made no mistake.
Claudio Bravo got a hand to Juanpi’s effort, but the ball looped into the net and La Rosaleda erupted.

3. Barcelona need that centre-back this summer

Shakira, Gerard Pique and their son Milan Pique attend the Catalonian Football Federation Awards
When it suits: Pique was not even in the squad

In the end this was a victory for Barcelona but there was some serious creaking along the way.
Luis Enrique has been hugely reliant on Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique this season but rested the latter for this trip to the Costa del Sol.
His heart won’t have thanked him for it.

Luising his head: Enrique opted for Vermaelen

Inexplicably Thomas Vermaelen got the nod over Marc Bartra once again and the Belgian was, once again, rubbish.
The tone was set five seconds in when he fell limply to the floor under Charles’ challenge and continued to be powder-puff for the entire fixture. Which is fine, as long as you’re not indecisive and error-prone too. But he was.
The Belgian may never have fully recovered from the Achilles problem at Arsenal and his year-long injury lay-off on joining Barcelona has done him no favours.

Charles Dias de Oliveira vies with Thomas Vermaelen
Verm ailing: Thomas Vermaelen struggled against Malaga

A booking for his attempted murder on Charles before half-time also meant he would have been walking a second-half tightrope.
So his manager saw sense and hauled him off in favour of Jeremy Mathieu at the break.
It was a blow for the hosts.

Mario Gaspar celebrates with Marc Bartra after scoring the first goal for Spain
Marc'd man: Marc Bartra can get in the Spain team, but not his club side

Robert Fernandez, Barcelona's sporting director has said Bartra can't leave this window despite interest from the Premier League and Bundesliga, which is fine. Barca are, after all, battling on three fronts.
But they clearly don't trust him enough, and based on Thomas Vermaelen's showing today their interest in the likes of Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Marquinhos is going to be a priority this summer.

4. Barcelona improve after break

Andres Iniesta in action
Regaining control: Andres Iniesta helped wrest back control of the midfield

A rest and (probably) a good bollocking did Barcelona some good as they returned to the field in far better form.
Lionel Messi operated far more centrally in the second half of the game, with Arda Turan jutting right into the Argentine's traditional area until the introduction of Ivan Rakitic.
Messi's decision to do this was crucial as, with no Neymar, Malaga had been able to double up on him out wide. Drifting into the middle he could find pockets to operate in.
And Messi's ability to find space in the centre proved crucial in Barca retaking the lead.

Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring Barcelona's second goal
Yellow fever: Messi got the winner

Adriano's cross was slightly overhit for the Argentine to comfortably hit, but he acrobatically adjusted his body to volley home from close range.
Malaga attempted to respond by getting back in the faces of their opponents but had had the wind knocked out of them slightly by such a swift second-half rebuttal and never again enjoyed the superiority of the first period.
Their chance to win this game had gone.

5. Next week is the big one for Barcelona

With players rested today and more likely to get rotated for the Copa del Rey quarter-final in midweek, all eyes are obviously on next Saturday's visit of Atletico Madrid.
Diego Simeone's men are genuine title challengers, make no mistake, and a win at the Nou Camp would make them favourites.

Manchester United 0-1 Southampton: Charlie Austin scores late winner on his debut as boos ring out for Louis van Gaal's side

  • Charlie Austin came off the bench and headed in James Ward-Prowse's free-kick in the 87th minute at Old Trafford
  • The English striker was making his debut for Southampton following his £4m move from QPR last week
  • Louis van Gaal's side lose more ground on Tottenham in fourth place and were booed off at full time

The structure is still there. The stadium is where it has always been, tight beside the railway lines leading into Manchester. The supporters can still see the girders from the four corners of the ground rising into the sky as they come off the M60 and head towards Stretford. The fans still pack the stands.
But there is little else that is recognisable about Manchester United these days. If you have not been for a while to the place known by many as The Theatre of Dreams, it is an unsettling, rather sad place to visit. It is hard not to feel that it is diminished.
Everything they have told you about the loss of enthusiasm at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal is true. Old Trafford is quiet now. Almost eerily so. But then United’s 1-0 home defeat to Southampton was thoroughly dispiriting. There was really no other word for it.

Charlie Austin was unmarked as he headed in James Ward-Prowse's free-kick
Southampton deserved their victory, secured by a late header by Charlie Austin, signed from QPR last week, on his debut. United deserved nothing. They were desperately poor, devoid of inspiration or guile, lacking passion and intensity. They looked like a team going through the motions. They looked like a team that does not believe.
They are now five points behind fourth-placed Spurs, who have momentum with them. Leicester are not showing any signs of blowing up. The alarm bells must be starting to ring louder and louder in the office of United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, although his fate may be tied to that of his manager.
Sure, there is still a strand of opinion at Old Trafford that the criticism of Van Gaal and his style is unjust and excessive. At a time when success, not just in football but in society as a whole, is expected to come instantly, it is very much an old-fashioned attitude.
It argues that United supporters had become so used to success under Sir Alex Ferguson and so unaccustomed to anything beyond the most brief of blips that they are now psychologically unable to cope with adversity.
It is easy to adhere to that theory from a distance, less easy when you witness the desperate, turgid, dreary, sterile, soporific fare that United serve up these days at close quarters. It is as if somebody has asked Van Gaal to provide a brand of football that is the complete antithesis of the panache and verve with which Ferguson’s United played.

Watching Manchester United at Old Trafford has become a strange, unnerving experience. It is as if the crowd has had the soul sucked out of it. It is as if the players have been drained of all their dynamism. It is as if enthusiasm has died and optimism has perished and ambition has been throttled.
The whole character of the place has changed. This used to be a place pulsating with dreams and excitement and the chase for trophies. Now it is a stadium populated by resignation and shrugs and boos. The first jeers broke out eight minutes before half-time yesterday. United’s DNA has been altered.
Even the stadium announcer sounds downcast these days. ‘Hope you have a great weekend in Manchester,’ he told one fan over the loud speaker system at half time but he could not muster much feeling for the sentiment. Fat chance of having a great weekend when it starts like this.
The first half was stripped bare of excitement. Wayne Rooney managed a couple of shots. Both were tame. Both were well wide. Marouane Fellaini nearly created a chance for Shane Long by miscuing an attempted clearance high into the air towards his own goal. United were booed off at half time and no wonder. They have now failed to score a goal in the first 45 minutes for 11 games in succession.
Every time Southampton gained possession in the attacking third, they showed an urgency that underlined just how laborious United have become. It was from one of these bursts of energy, eight minutes before half time, that the visitors should have taken the lead but Mane could not quite control a through ball that had left him with only De Gea to beat.

For a summary of United’s play, try this: in the fifth minute, Herrera dispossessed Targett on the edge of the Southampton box. Southampton were caught off guard and out of shape and Rooney and Martial were lurking in the middle. But Herrera passed the ball short to Lingard, who passed it back to him. Herrera then retreated with the ball towards midfield, spread it backwards and eventually Rooney dropped deep to try to instill some urgency into play and was tackled.
That is fairly typical of United’s build-up this season. Patience personified. Cautious to a tee. That was why the biggest cheer of the afternoon resonated around the ground at the start of the second half when it was announced that Juan Mata, a player with flair in abundance, was replacing Fellaini.
United did start the second half more brightly and exerted some pressure on the Southampton goal but it was still Ronald Koeman’s team who looked more likely to score. A scintillating run by Mane stretched United to their limit and his cross needed a fine saving header from Darmian to deny Long. Long headed wide soon after. Wanyama should have done better with another headed chance.
In the search for brightness amid the gloom, the eye was drawn to David de Gea’s fluourescent lime green jersey but very little else. Then Austin was introduced as a late substitute and promptly headed home powerfully and accurately from a corner. In former times, United might have conjured a rousing riposte. Those times have gone.

Liverpool's move for Alex Teixeira: Why Reds face near-impossible struggle to prise him from Shakhtar

The club's oligarch owner is the richest man in Ukraine and owns a vast business empire.

Bang in form: Teixeira has been in amongst the goals for Shakhtar this season
Liverpool are facing a near impossible struggle in their attempt to sign Brazilian star Alex Teixeira in the January window.
The Reds have bid £25m for the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, but they have already had that offer turned down flat by the club's billionaire owner Rinat Akhmetov.
The oligarch is the richest man in Ukraine and owns a vast business empire that was - until the recent conflict in that war-torn country - valued at more than £12billion.
The 49-year-old businessman controls more than half of Ukraine's coal, steel and thermo-electricity sectors, and has also invested heavily in the London property market, including the purchase of the most expensive property in Britain.
In 2013 he paid £136.4m for an apartment in One Hyde Park, as he looked to move the base of his empire to England's capital.

Alex Teixeira celebrates with Dentinho after scoring Shakhtar Donetsk's first goal

Akhmetov is said to be obsessed with Shakhtar, despite the damage his business because of the conflict in his home city of Donetsk which is just 50 miles from the Russia border, where Russian-backed rebels have taken control, and declared an independent Donetsk People's Republic.
His football club has been forced to move from their recently built multi-million pound Donbass arena and play all their home games in the western Ukraine city of Lviv, with plans to move back put on hold after the stadium was bombed in 2014.
But Akhmetov issued a statement recently insisting that his Brazilian star, who has scored 50 goals in the last two seasons, will not be sold in the January window.
He wants to keep Shakhtar as a symbol of hope for the residents of Donetsk, after recently making a speech denouncing the Independent Donetsk Republic. Akhmetov is not a man to be trifled with.

He took control of the club when his former business partner and suspected criminal underworld leader, Akhat Bragin, was blown up in his seat at the football club's stadium in 1995.
Akhmetov, who was the vice president of Shakhtar at the time, had skipped the game where five other people were killed along with the president in the VIP directors' box.
He has since denied any links with the bombing, or with Bragin's organised crime connections, despite working as his assistant. The billionaire's fortune has taken a hit since the conflict in his home country, and he has largely relocated to London, where he is quietly building a new empire, and his current wealth is valued at more than £7billion.
One source suggested he will not budge on selling Teixeira until the summer."For him, the football club is the main part of his life,” one expert suggested. “All of the decisions regarding players are between him and the coach. Nothing is done without him.”
The Brazilian attacking midfielder is also wanted by Chelsea, and he will push hard to leave in January, even though he realises he is fighting a losing battle.

The 26 year old is currently at a training camp in Florida with his Ukraine club, but he spoke to Brazilian journalists recently, insisting he wanted to move to boost his chances of playing for his country.
“Playing in the Premier League is a personal dream – it's the best championship in the world,” he said a month ago. “What I've heard and what my agent has said is that Chelsea, Juventus and PSG have made offers, but Chelsea and Juventus have gone further in the negotiations.
“All three are big clubs. Wherever I'll end up, I'll be happy. I'm happy to have received this offer from Chelsea, one of Europe's big clubs, but it's my agent who's taking care of this.”
One thing is for sure, if Liverpool's bid is to be successful, then they will have to significantly increase it from the current £25m on the table, with sources suggesting an offer beyond £40m will be required and even then probably in the summer.
