FC Barcelona 6-1 PS: Sergi Roberto scores stoppage-time winner as Luis Enrique's side mount miraculous comeback to reach quarter-finals

  • Barcelona came back from a 4-0 first-leg defeat to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League
  • Luis Suarez gave Barcelona a third minute lead as they chased a record comeback against PSG
  • Defender Layvin Kurzawa bundled the ball into the back of his own net five minutes before half-time
  • Lionel Messi smashed home a penalty given by the fifth official after Neymar had been brought down
  • Edinson Cavani fired home from inside the 18-yard box with Barca just a goal from drawing level on aggregate
  • Neymar scores wonderful free-kick but too late for Barcelona to mount another miraculous comeback
  • Brazilian then scored from the penalty spot to draw the home side level on aggregate but going out
  • Sergi Roberto poked home from close range to complete a miraculous comeback from Luis Enrique's men

It was with almost the last kick of the game that Sergi Roberto scored from close range to knock Paris Saint-Germain out and make Champions League history.
A goal from their Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez gave them hope after just three minutes but his international team-mate Edinson Cavani appeared to have killed the dream on 63 minutes.

Neymar never gave up however and he scored with a free-kick and penalty leaving Barcelona needing just one more goal. And when there was only one more minute to score it in substitute Roberto popped up to make mission impossible a reality.
The miracle was on as early as the third minute when Suarez got the opener making it 4-1 on aggregate.
He had called for a calm and measured approach before the match but he was anything but when the first whistle blew driving the home team forward. When PSG failed to clear a loose ball in the box he clipped a header goalwards with his back to goal.
Kevin Trapp had come off his line and so the ball sailed over his head and, although it was hooked away, crossed the line for the first goal.
It was Suarez’s 65th goal in 64 appearances Camp Nou appearances. This stadium is too big for many strikers but he has had the measure of it from day one.
PSG settled a little after the early scare and Barcelona became increasingly jumpy as the first-half clock ticked down without a second goal.
Messi, Iniesta and Sergio Busquets all uncharacteristically played stray passes and Gerard Pique was anxious in the tackle too, going into the book for a foul from behind on Cavani.

Five minutes before the break the second goal finally came. It was every bit as scrappy as the first with Iniesta back-heeling the ball from the byline into a crowded six-yard box and Layvin Kurzawa putting it past his own goalkeeper.
Emery’s half-time team talk was set now: 'We're definitely going to have to score lads'. Barcelona supporters were singing 'yes we can' as the half time whistle was blown and five minutes after the restart they were all believing it.
Thomas Meunier dived head-first to stop Neymar getting around him and when the Brazilian ran into his head and tumbled the Barcelona players were convinced they had a penalty.
The referee hesitated but with Suarez and company sprinting to the official on the line, who seemed to have a different opinion, Deniz Aytekin conferred and pointed to the spot.
Messi had scored all five of his penalties this season before stepping up. Number six flew into the top corner and Barcelona were a goal from drawing the tie.

Edinson Cavani had not read the script however. He first hit the post from Meunier’s cross and was then given another chance on 63 minutes, this time he made no mistake.
No one has scored more goals in Europe this season and with Pique floored he buried a shot into the roof of Ter Stegen’s net with the outside of his foot.
Angel Di Maria came on and could have made it 3-2 on the night when he raced clear only to shoot wide. The image of his love-heart celebration still haunts Barcelona from the first leg it would have been cruel had he extended the aggregate lead. How costly that miss was to prove.

With two minutes left Neymar curled the perfect free-kick past Trapp to make it 4-1 on the night. Barcelona still needed two goals but Neymar wasn’t beaten and when Suarez was pushed over in the area the Brazilian slammed home the penalty.
The players turned to the supporters for one last rise in the decibel levels and Marc Andre ter Stegen went forward for Messi’s free-kick.
PSG cleared it but ter Stegen was then fouled meaning another free-kick. When that was cleared it surely meant that Barcelona were out.
Roberto scored and there was barely time to get the entire celebrating home bench off the pitch and take the restart. Barcelona were through and history had been made.

Paris Saint-Germain train together at the Nou Camp as Unai Emery looks to secure famous victory over FC Barcelona

PSG thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Paris

  • Paris Saint-Germain face Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night
  • The French champions hold a 4-0 lead from the first-leg at the Parc des Princes
  • Unai Emery is hoping to lead PSG to a fourth straight quarter-final appearance
  • Paris Saint-Germain trained together on the Nou Camp pitch on Tuesday night 20.45
Emery has not lost a European knock-out tie since April 2012 and his three successive Europa League triumphs with Sevilla encouraged PSG's billionaire chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi to appoint him as coach last year in place of Laurent Blanc.
Blanc is the most decorated coach in PSG's history, winning three consecutive Ligue 1 titles at a canter, but Al-Khelaifi grew tired of the Frenchman's failure to get beyond the Champions League quarter-finals three years in a row.

Emery has struggled domestically, however, with his side second in Ligue 1, trailing leaders Monaco by three points.
The Spaniard suffered four league defeats in his first five months, double the number of games Blanc lost in his entire final season, although the tide has turned his way since the new year, boosted by the signing of forward Julian Draxler.
PSG have won 13 of 15 competitive games in 2017, including hammering arch-rivals Marseille 5-1 away and thrashing Barca, a game midfielder Blaise Matuidi called the best performance since he joined the club in 2011, the same time PSG were taken over by the Qatari Investment Authority.

PSG's only continental trophy is the 1996 European Cup Winners Cup and knocking out Barca, who have won the Champions League four times in the last 11 years, would represent their greatest European triumph under the Qatari owners.
Emery had faced Barca 23 times before the first leg and only won once, but he handed out a tactical masterclass to opposite number Luis Enrique, straying from his usual 4-3-3 formation to deploy a 4-2-3-1 shape which gave his side control in midfield.
Adrien Rabiot ran Sergio Busquets ragged while Marco Verratti outpassed Andres Iniesta, leaving livewire wide forwards Angel Di Maria and Draxler to take turns in cutting the five-times European champions apart.
No side in the European Cup's 61-year history has progressed after losing a first leg by four goals, although Barcelona coach Luis Enrique was beaming with optimism in his pre-game news conference.

'We have nothing to lose and everything to gain, and if a team like PSG can score four goals than we can score six,' he said.
PSG trained together at the Nou Camp on Tuesday night and Emery insists he's taking nothing for granted against the Spanish champions, despite his side's four-goal advantage.
'I have the same confidence in my team as before the first leg and the same respect for Barca,' he said.
'If I've learned anything from football it's that you should always respect your rivals, but we have a lot of confidence in ourselves, and this tie could be another step for us.'
