Everton boss Roberto Martinez fumes after Chelsea grab late draw: 'I'm very angry... the level of the referee was diabolical'

  • John Terry's last-minute backheel earned Chelsea 3-3 draw against Everton
  • But the Chelsea captain appeared to be offside when he equalised late on
  • It came more than a minute beyond the seven minutes of injury time played
  • Everton manager Roberto Martinez lambasted referee Michael Jones
  • He said Jones is not up to standard required of a Premier League official

Roberto Martinez claimed blunder referee Mike Jones is not up to the standard required of a Premier League official after John Terry scored a dramatic 98th minute equaliser for Chelsea.
Everton were leading 3-2 when Terry - who appeared to be standing in an offside position - made it 3-3 with an improvised backheel to stretch Guus Hiddink's unbeaten run to seven games.
Martinez fumed: 'The level of the referee was diabolical in that respect. It is something that is very hurtful.

TIMELINE OF MINUTES ADDED ON

Seven minutes added on at Stamford Bridge
90.01: GOAL - Funes Mori for Everton
91.20: KICK-OFF - Chelsea restart
97.53: GOAL - Terry scores for Chelsea
'If you ask any Chelsea fan they will tell you it was offside. It is clear-cut and an incredible decision to see in what we consider the best league in the world.
'I am very angry. We drew a football game because of a horrific decision right at the end.
'It doesn't come down to the interpretation of the referee - he just wasn't up to the level. It's heartbreaking, a major error which is difficult to take.

'The fourth official made it clear that it was time, before the ball was played into the box - there is no debate. The player was also two yards offside in the box and that's unacceptable.
Martinez did not approach referee Mike Jones or his fellow officials afterwards.
'It's pointless,' the former Wigan manager added.
The lengthy celebrations following Ramiro Funes Mori's late goal might have contributed to the additional minute being added, with Everton believing they had secured a first league win at Stamford Bridge in 21 years after staving off a Chelsea fightback.

Then Terry struck with a deft flick on a 700th club appearance which included an earlier own goal.
Hiddink remains unbeaten in six matches since being appointed Chelsea caretaker boss for a second time and admitted his side benefited from good fortune.
He added: 'Roberto was right, why should I deny it? I have seen it - Oscar touched the ball and John was half a yard offside, even though he made a beautiful goal.'
Terry's own goal and a Kevin Mirallas strike put Everton 2-0 up, but Chelsea scored twice in quick succession to restore parity.
A howler from Tim Howard allowed Diego Costa to net and Cesc Fabregas' deflected strike levelled matters.
Worse was to follow for Chelsea when Costa limped off and Funes Mori turned in fellow substitute Gerard Deulofeu's cross. Costa immediately went to hospital for a scan on a shin injury.
Hiddink added: 'He was in a lot of pain. He will have a scan. We don't know the result. I hope it's not bad.'

The potential absence of Costa, including in next Sunday's match at Arsenal, could lead to Chelsea making moves in the transfer market.
But Chelsea interim manager Hiddink would not be drawn on that prospect.
'For the moment we are doing nothing (in the transfer market),' Hiddink said. 'We hope Diego comes out the hospital in good health and we go on as we are doing.'

Snow from Scotland to London TONIGHT: Britain to be blanketed with three inches falling across huge area of the country as temperatures plummet to -10C

  • Met Office issues weather warnings as snow set to fall from Glasgow to London overnight
  • Surprise weather comes as a knock-on effect of Hurricane Alex which emerged in the Atlantic earlier this week
  • Tonight's snow does not change Monday's forecast which predicts more of the white stuff coming to the south
  • Temperatures to hit -10C in some parts of the UK tonight but expected to get milder into next week

A surprise burst of snow is set to carpet Britain tonight with up to three inches falling from western Scotland to London while temperatures plunge to as low as -10C.
Forecasters say the shock weather comes as a knock-on effect of Hurricane Alex in the Atlantic, which is pushing mild air from the west into conflict with cold air coming from the east, causing an outbreak of the white stuff.
It means there will be two bouts of snow over London within three days as experts believe a weather system bound for the capital on Monday will still come in regardless of the current conditions.

The Met Office has issued yellow 'be prepared' warnings for almost all of England and most of Scotland, with snow predicted to hit London some time this evening.
A spokesman said: 'It's a very complex weather pattern. This is a knock-on effect of Hurricane Alex, which has had a big impact. It's caused an awkward situation between very cold air coming from the east and mild air from the west.
'It looks as if the cold air will win out and this outbreak will gradually move south over the UK with up to five to 10cm possible in Scotland, 5cm in the Peak District and then perhaps around 3cm falling over London.'

The tropical storm hit Portugal's Azores islands on Friday morning with winds reaching 85mph, before heading north towards Greenland.
Met Office experts have also warned of the threat of difficult driving conditions from sleet and snow.
With largely clear skies and no cloud cover, the public are being urged to take care on untreated roads and paths hit by frost.

Saturday is forecast to be frosty but many areas will stay dry and enjoy sunny spells. Wintry showers will persist in eastern areas.
Rural parts of the Highlands and Aberdeenshire will face the lowest temperatures, forecasters said, while around 5cm to 10cm (2-4in) of snow could fall on higher ground.
Traffic Scotland has issued warnings of icy conditions throughout much of the country, but snow lovers have been promised a great day on the slopes.
The Met Office added: 'Ice may prove an additional hazard in places. Please be aware of the potential for some travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.

'A frontal zone moving eastwards into Britain on Saturday will run into and stall against the cold air mass which became established over the UK earlier in the week.
'This allows rain at the leading edge of this frontal zone to turn to snow and persist for several hours before the frontal zone weakens during Sunday, allowing less cold conditions to start developing and some of the snow to start melting.
'This snow is expected to fall along a relatively narrow corridor, perhaps only 100 miles wide, which means that some areas within the warning area may escape much of the snow.
'Meanwhile, where snow is limited or rain occurs instead, icy stretches may develop on untreated roads as rain and snow starts.'

Fleets of gritters were out in Cornwall with one traffic officer describing the conditions as 'lethal'.
The officer added: 'It would help if people got up a bit sooner in these conditions to allow extra time to get to work.
'The roads are lethal so obviously you have to drive more slowly - if people set off at the same time as usual they are under pressure to keep to their normal speed when in fact they should be allowing a longer time to be safe.'
Meanwhile, an 18-strong fleet of gritters - named by schoolchildren - made their way out onto the roads of East Sussex in a bid to prevent accidents.

China pledges to join UN efforts to punish N. Korea

Yoon Soon-ku, right, director-general at the Ministry of National Defense's international policy division, shakes hands with Chinese defense ministry's Foreign Affairs Office Director Rear-Adm. Guan Youfei during working-level defense talks between the two countries in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Friday.

China has vowed to join the U.N. Security Council's (UNSC) efforts to take tougher sanctions against North Korea in response to Pyongyang's latest nuclear test, the Ministry of National Defense said Friday.

"China made clear that North Korea's fourth nuclear test is in violation of the UNSC sanctions as well as the Sept. 19 Joint Statement on Pyongyang's nuclear program," said Director-General Yoon Soon-ku at the defense ministry's International Policy Division. "And it will join the UNSC to press the North."

The announcement came after working-level defense talks between South Korea and China in Seoul, Friday.

Yoon led the South Korean delegation while the Chinese side was headed by Rear-Adm. Guan Youfei, the director of the Chinese defense ministry's foreign affairs office.

"During today's dialogue, China made it official that that it's absolutely against Pyongyang's nuclear program and tests," Yoon said.

"Beijing said it will hold on to its three principles in relation to North Korea — denuclearization, peace on the Korean Peninsula and dialogue.

"South Korea and China will work closely to settle issues on Pyongyang's nuclear program."

Yoon added Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also summoned North Korean Ambassador to China Ji Jae-ryong to protest Pyongyang's latest test.

This was the first defense meeting between the two nations since Jan. 6 when North Korea purportedly exploded its first hydrogen bomb in Punggye-ri, North Hamgyong Province.

If true, it would be the Pyongyang's fourth nuclear test following ones in 2006 and 2009 and 2013.

The UNSC imposed a set of four resolutions — 1718, 1874, 2087, and 2094 — on the North between 2006 and 2013 to prevent the military regime from developing weapons of mass destruction.

The surprise test last week showed that such U.N. pressure has not been successful and the Kim Jong-un regime has advanced its nuclear technology.

North Korea has also not followed steps toward denuclearization in line with the Joint Statement made among on Sept. 19, 2005 among members of the six-party talks on its nuclear program.

China is one of the five permanent members of the UNSC and a six-party talks participant.

But it was seen that Beijing was largely reluctant to exert influence on Pyongyang due to concerns over a possible collapse of the Kim Jong-un regime and an influx of millions of refugees.

Meanwhile, the vice ministers of South Korea, the United States and Japan will meet in Tokyo today to discuss their joint response to the alleged H-bomb test.

First Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam will join his two counterparts — U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki.

This will be the highest level of dialogue involving the three allies since Jan. 6.

Given the serious nature of the Kim regime's nuclear ambitions, the three allies have underscored their need to bolster their joint security alliance.

They also have been urging China's to play a "constructive role" on North Korea.
