Beating the Belgians was one thing, this was another entirely. Porto are a proper Champions League team, two times winners and perennially in the knock-out stages. They too had no answer to the question of Leicester.

Keep this up and Claudio Ranieri can start looking ahead to two-legged ties of his own. Four more points might do it and another win here over FC Bruges later in the tournament appears a distinct possibility.

They rode their luck a little to see out victory – most notably when Jesus Corona smacked the post in the closing stages as Kasper Schmeichel failed to gather a cross. But the intensity of their game, the inter-changing of their forward line, appears able to trouble even Europe’s seasoned performers.

The decisive goal came courtesy of Islam Slimani, the so-called Dragon Slayer who so frequently tormented Porto while a Sporting Lisbon player. He scored against them a month ago for his former team an continued to breathe fire here. He has now helped inflict Porto’s only two defeats of the season.

Leicester’s supporters will be wondering what all the fuss regarding this competition was about. Next up, Copenhagen visit. Win that and it will be party time.

The incredulity that Leicester fans feel seeing their team play in the Champions League will probably last for as long as the club are in the competition.

There were certainly more than a few rubbing their eyes last night as the anthem played for the first time in this part of England.

The ground was full early with supporters making an unwavering racket a good 15 minutes before kick-off. There had only been 1,400 or so allowed to travel to the match in Bruges, so here was a chance for 20 times that amount to revel in Leicester’s ‘European Tour’.

The clappers which became synonymous with their Premier League title march were introduced to continental opponents.

The atmosphere was the kind of edgy excitement that comes from entering uncharted terrain and has long ceased accompanying this tournament at the Emirates, the Allianz Arena or other stadiums we are not allowed to call by their usual names because of UEFA’s commercial rules.

So the King Power was Leicester City Stadium for the night and as the teams strode out a trio of menacing banners were unfurled from the South Stand. ‘Forever Fearless’ was separated by a pair of eerie fox eyes. At the first whistle the roar was enormous.

That electricity was momentarily unplugged in the third minute when Porto midfielder Andre Silva beat Wes Morgan’s offside trap and Kasper Schmeichel looked to have advanced too far too eagerly. But Silva’s lob drifted just wide and the hosts were reprieved.

From then on, Leicester took the game to their more established opponents. They were quick, sharp to second balls, and pressed Porto back with pace and drive.

A long-throw by Christian Fuchs caused havoc in Porto’s area just as Luis Hernandez did from the other flank in Belgium. Back-pedaling centre half Felipe diverted the ball just wide of his own post.

In the 14th minute Marc Albrighton’s deep free-kick found Slimani, who flicked on but only into the arms of Iker Cassilas.

Jamie Vardy was linking well with his strike partner, looking for knock-downs and charging into the box, one promising cross heading for Riyad Mahrez narrowly intercepted by Porto’s defence.

Leicester may be offering a pale imitation of themselves in domestic competition but they have approached the Champions League with clinical determination, undaunted by the supposed higher level.

In the 25th minute they took the lead with a goal to rival any scored across Europe last night. Danny Drinkwater and Christian Fuchs were involved before Albrighton hit a superb crossfield pass from left to right that fell perfectly to Mahrez.

The Algerian controlled in an instant, beat Alex Telles with that trademark shuffle of the feet and whipped an inswinging cross crying out to be hit. The ball flew over Vardy but straight on to Slimani’s head and moments later he was wheeling off having beaten Casillas to score his seventh goal in seven games against Porto.

The Portuguese team did have their moments. A deceptive shot by Miguel Layun required Schmeichel to be alert, while the same player hit a flat free-kick just past the post.

But Claudio Ranieri’s side looked comfortable, back to the tight defensive unit that strangled the life out of Premier League opponents last season.

Just before the hour Vardy instigated another break that eventually led to Mahrez unleashing a low drive that Casillas pushed round the post. He won’t be the last goalkeeper tested by Leicester.

The visit to the winery will come after an engagement at the Okanagan University in Kelowna where William and Kate will meet students and watch an exhibition volleyball match.

Later they will fly to Whitehorse in the Yukon, where they will stay the night - away from their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte , who will remain in their base of Victoria - for two days of engagements.

The couple are almost mid-way through their eight-day tour of Canada on behalf of the Queen.

Los Estatutos Federales contemplan la posibilidad de una moción de censura.

Pedro Sánchez no cede ni un milímetro, asegura que no dimitirá y admite que “es evidente” que no tiene el apoyo de buena parte de su partido. El secretario general del PSOE asume “toda la responsabilidad” por ello, aunque manda un mensaje a sus críticos: “Si hay un congreso, se verá si tengo el apoyo o no de los afiliados”.

“Estoy asumiendo mi responsabilidad política”, dice un Sánchez que no se ha ido tras la doble debacle socialista el 25S en Galicia y el País Vasco. Y, adelanta, tampoco lo hará pase lo que pase el sábado: está dispuesto a seguir adelante con su propuesta, que contempla primarias el 23 de octubre y el 39 Congreso Federal a principios de diciembre. Un plan que tendrá que someter a votación: en un Partido Socialista abierto en canal, la última palabra la tendrá el Comité Federal, que incluso podría forzar la salida del secretario general.

Ante un líder que no da un paso atrás, unos trescientos socialistas tienen una cita trascendental este fin de semana en Madrid. El voto es secreto, pero muchos ya han manifestado públicamente su parecer. Tanto es así que las principales federaciones socialistas no comparten los planes de Sánchez, a quien acusan de poner por delante al partido en una España con un Gobierno en funciones desde hace más de nueve meses y que, si nada cambia, celebrará sus terceras elecciones generales en un año antes de que acabe 2016.

Si los acontecimientos no se precipitan antes y el Comité Federal rechaza el sábado la hoja de ruta de Sánchez, el secretario general socialista y su Ejecutiva quedarían en una situación todavía más delicada. Preguntado por una posible dimisión llegado ese momento,descarta dejar el cargo, algo que ya le han pedido socialistas como Antonio Miguel Carmona, José María Barreda… incluso el PSOE andaluz mostraba este lunes la puerta de salida: “Los resultados [electorales en Galicia y el País Vasco] son inadmisibles. Cada uno que lo interprete como quiera, pero creo que he hablado claro”, afirmaba Juan Cornejo.

Forzar su marcha, moción de censura o dimisión colectiva

Si Sánchez se fuera, una gestora se haría cargo del partido hasta la elección de un nuevo secretario general. Una solución temporal y extrema que, sin embargo, ayudaría a que la herida de la abstención ante una investidura de Rajoy fuera menos dolorosa.

Si se mantuviera inmóvil en su resistencia, los críticos tendrían dos caminos para despojar a Sánchez del PSOE. La primera, posible este mismo sábado, viene establecida por el artículo 36c de los Estatutos Federales y la recuerda el 7c del Capítulo III del Reglamento del Comité Federal: “Es competencia del Comité Federal exigir, en su caso, la responsabilidad política de la Comisión Ejecutiva Federal mediante la presentación de una moción de censura, apoyada al menos por el 20 por 100 de sus miembros y sancionada para tener efectos por la mayoría absoluta de los y las integrantes del Comité Federal”. La segunda requeriría una dimisión colectiva (la mitad más uno de sus miembros) en la Comisión Ejecutiva Federal. En cualquier caso el PSOE quedaría en manos de una gestora.

Nada de ello ha pasado nunca hasta ahora, pero también es verdad que España se está acostumbrando este año a vivir situaciones políticas inéditas. A la espera de lo que suceda,Susana Díaz ha admitido por primera vez, y en plena guerra, que podría dar un paso al frente: “Donde crean mis compañeros que yo sea útil, en la cabeza o en la cola, allí estaré y siempre buscando lo mismo, un PSOE unido, cohesionado y ganador, que gane elecciones”.

"Pongamos encima de la mesa las cartas"

Desde el PP, Fernando Martínez-Maillo habla de un secretario general que “ha pulsado el botón de la autodestrucción” y tiene “secuestrado al PSOE” y como “rehenes a los ciudadanos”. Pablo Casado dice que el socialista, cuya actitud “roza el terreno de la psiquiatría”, “está dispuesto a morir matando”: “Un partido no es una secta y si el líder decide suicidarse, lo que no puede hacer es que todos sus compañeros se suiciden colectivamente”. Por eso, añade, confía en que el Comité Federal del sábado “eche el freno de mano al vehículo suicida de Pedro Sánchez”.

Convencido de que “es hora de que pongamos encima de la mesa las cartas”, el líder socialista no mueve un ápice su postura: “La hoja de ruta que defiendo es ‘no’ a Rajoy, ‘no’ a terceras elecciones y ‘sí’ a un Gobierno alternativo”. Desde Podemos, Íñigo Errejónreconoce que si hay acuerdo con el PSOE para “sacar” al presidente del PP de La Moncloa será “en condiciones muy difíciles, a última hora y apurando los plazos”.

Para muchos el bloqueo político en el Congreso de los Diputados tiene nombre y apellidos, pero Pedro Sánchez está dispuesto a seguir adelante. Cueste lo que cueste. Aunque cada vez más socialistas están convencidos de que el PSOE tiene que dejar de estar en sus manos, por lo que todo parece indicar que antes o después las palabras se traducirán en hechos.

Pedro Sánchez se enroca, reta a los barones y embiste a todo lo que se mueva.

Pedro Sánchez es un ventajista que en el Oeste americano le hubiesen llenado la barriga de plomo. Quiere ir a primarias porque se asegura otros 5 meses de poder y sueldo -está tieso- y, además juega con la ventaja de los miembros y miembras que, actualmente, están viviendo de la mamandurria que les da su mano o por su orden les da el PSOE. Los críticos, encabezados por Susana Díaz, le exigen que asuma responsabilidades por el 25S

La guerra total en el PSOE ya es imparable. Y como en toda contienda, habrá vencedores y vencidos. Pedro Sánchez pasó ayer por alto los pésimos resultados en Galicia y el País Vasco y retó a los críticos a que le disputen la secretaría general en unas primarias, en lo que sería un duelo definitivo, y a que digan de una vez en el comité federal del sábado si defienden la abstención para facilitar que gobierne Mariano Rajoy. El PSOE andaluz de Susana Díaz le respondió exigiéndole que asuma responsabilidades, es decir que dimita, por el desastre electoral.

Será el comité federal el que tenga que dar luz verde o rechazar su plan, que contempla celebrar las primarias el 23 de octubre y el congreso federal en la primera semana de diciembre. Preguntado en cuatro ocasiones si dimitirá en caso de que el máximo órgano del partido entre congresos tumbe su propuesta, Sánchez se limitó a decir que está «convencido de que no va a poner ninguna cortapisa para que la militancia vote y se pronuncie». En otras palabras, su única vía para mantenerse como secretario general es enfrentar a los barones con las bases, que cree le apoyan mayoritariamente.

Desvió el debate

Sánchez no hizo la mínima autocrítica por el deslome del PSOE del 25S y planteó el debate que hay en el PSOE como una disputa entre los que defienden la abstención, «de una u otra forma», para facilitar el Gobierno a Rajoy, donde situó a los barones críticos, y los que apuestan por mantener el no y tratar de formar un Gobierno alternativo, como él y sus fieles. «No hay más opciones, o se apoya a Rajoy o terceras elecciones o un Gobierno alternativo», aseguró. Y envió un mensaje directo a la presidenta andaluza, sin citarla, al asegurar que frente a los que defienden que con 85 escaños no se puede ni pensar en gobernar y a la vez dicen no a Rajoy y a las terceras elecciones, defiende un Gobierno transversal con Podemos y Ciudadanos, aunque está dispuesto a hablar con «todas las fuerzas». «Ha llegado el momento, es la hora de hablar claro», señaló tras más de cuatro horas de una tensa comisión permanente de la ejecutiva, en la que se oyeron voces discordantes. Sostuvo que el debate en el partido debe zanjarse con las primarias porque «nos está haciendo daño y abriendo una división que nos perjudica electoralmente». Una alusión para responsabilizar también a los barones del batacazo electoral.

El líder socialista desafió a los críticos que quieren derribarlo a que «den un paso al frente». «Las personas que consideran que con su liderazgo el partido estaría en mejor posición que se presenten a un congreso federal», aseguró. Ademas, se quejó de que se le esté haciendo oposición desde dentro y pidió que una vez que la militancia elija al secretario general, «el PSOE tenga una única voz y no lo que ha ocurrido hasta ahora». «Lo que no tiene ningún sentido es que yo intente hablar con otras formaciones políticas y se me cuestione desde dentro», afirmó.

La respuesta de los críticos no se hizo esperar. Díaz convocó el comité director del PSOE-A este jueves para fijar una posición, que de acuerdo con lo que dijeron ayer varios de sus dirigentes será rechazar el plan de Sánchez. Su número dos, Juan Cornejo, aseguró que no es momento de celebrar un congreso, que calificó como «cortina de humo de lo que ha sido un desastre», sino de asumir «responsabilidades políticas». «Cada uno que lo interprete como quiera,», añadió. Cornejo abogó por un «congreso de refundación» del partido.

El diputado Eduardo Madina exigió a Sánchez que asuma responsabilidades por el «hundimiento electoral inmenso». Carme Chacón aseguró que «así no podemos seguir». El exministro José Blanco se mostró «desolado» por los resultados del 25S y se preguntó «qué más tiene que pasar» para que el partido «reflexione». La semana pasada los presidentes de Castilla La-Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, y Aragón, Javier Lambán, calificaron de irresponsable el plan de Sánchez de adelantar el congreso.

Un calendario hecho a medida para ser candidato en las terceras elecciones

La primera cita decisiva para Sánchez será el comité federal del sábado, que deberá aprobar o rechazar su plan de celebrar primarias el 23 de octubre para elegir al secretario general y, entre el 2 y el 4 de diciembre, el congreso federal, que se limitaría a ratificar lo que decida la militancia. Un calendario hecho a su medida para dificultar la presentación de candidaturas alternativas, en especial la de Susana Díaz, que contemplaba saltar a Madrid con más tiempo.

Sánchez defendió ayer que en tres semanas da tiempo para que se presenten otros candidatos y, si gana uno que esté a favor de la abstención a Rajoy, permita que se forme Gobierno.

Rechazo e incongruencia

Los críticos lo rechazan de plano y le echan en cara que fuera él mismo quien defendiera hace meses que no se podía celebrar el congreso hasta que se resolviera la gobernabilidad de España. Esas primarias tendrían lugar en la recta final de las negociaciones para formar Gobierno. Sánchez admitió que a él solo le quedaría una semana para cerrar un hipotético acuerdo (en realidad cuatro días, por las consultas con el rey), ya que el 31 de octubre se disolverían las Cortes. Si las elecciones fueran el 18 de diciembre los socialistas celebrarían el congreso en plena precampaña. Dado que el pacto con Ciudadanos y Podemos es inviable, al igual que con los independentistas, todo indica que el plan de Sánchez tiene como objetivo mantenerse como secretario general y candidato en las terceras elecciones.
