Willmott adds spice to pre-selection contest
Intrigue: Matt Taylor, Dean Nalder, Deidre Willmott, Nick Goiran and Peter Collier. Illustrataion: toby Wilkinson
Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief Deidre Willmott has, with exquisite timing, added another layer of intrigue to a wild preselection contest that has become about so much more than just who the Liberal Party will pick to represent the people of Bateman at next year’s State election.
But the context could not be clearer. Last weekend Matt O’Sullivan, a man who ran Andrew Forrest’s flagship charitable venture Minderoo Foundation and had strong endorsements from the mining billionaire as well as Federal Minister Alan Tudge and State Minister Joe Francis, was narrowly defeated in a preselection battle for the new Federal seat of Burt by rookie City of Gosnells councillor Liz Storer. Storer was the preferred candidate of MLC Nick Goiran, a man for whom she worked as an electorate officer and who has fast become one of the most polarising and influential people in the WA Liberal Party.
Goiran’s influence will again be put to the test at the weekend in the bitter battle for Bateman. Goiran is backing Matt Taylor, the current holder of the title of member for Bateman.
Taylor’s existing seat has been split four ways by the electoral redistribution, with 45 per cent of it in the new boundaries of Bateman and 3 per cent in the seat of Bicton, which looms as the obvious consolation prize for the loser.
Dean Nalder says Bateman should be his because 55 per cent of his existing seat of Alfred Cove is in Bateman’s new boundaries.
Nalder has the support of Liberal establishment figures such as Danielle Blain and party president Norman Moore, but also the business community whom Willmott speaks for. Corporate titan John Poynton is listed as a referee on Nalder’s Bateman nomination form.
But it is widely believed that powerbroker Peter Collier would rather see Taylor prevail (while ally Mathias Cormann is said to be sitting on the sidelines). “Nick does have a lot of support but there are also people who hate everything about him with every fibre of their being, absolutely despise him,” a party source said.
A barrister and solicitor, Goiran, 38, was once a member of the Christian Democrats. He joined the Liberal Party in 2006. Seven months later, he was president of the Liberals’ Canning Vale branch and a month after that the vice- president of Canning division. He became an MLC just three years after joining the party.
Halfway through his second term he managed to usurp former minister Simon O’Brien in the No.1 spot on the South Metro ticket and he is now making enemies in the party’s establishment as his power continues to grow. It has been a meteoric rise. Some of the criticism Goiran attracts is sour grapes (no one likes to lose a preselection) and there are some in the Liberal Party who lump him in with other overt Christians in the party such as Peter Abetz and the evangelical church-aligned MPs from the northern suburbs Albert Jacob, Jan Norberger and Ian Goodenough in a bid to create a panic about the rise of the “Christian Right”.
“They share similar views but I don’t think there is some sort of co-ordinated pincer movement from the northern suburbs and the southern suburbs,” one senior Liberal, no fan of Goiran or the churchies, said yesterday.
But some of it is founded in genuine concern about the direction the party might take if Goiran, who declined to comment, continues to expand his influence. Some worry that the party will be pushed towards hardline positions on social questions of abortion and euthanasia.
“The Liberal Party is not mean to be the Christian Democrats,” a sceptic said.
No one is prepared to predict a winner this weekend. Both the Taylor and the Nalder camps are said to be quietly confident of prevailing. They can’t both be right. Nalder has made veiled threats to quit politics if he does not win — a high-stakes gambit.
Asked about the preselection contest yesterday, Nalder said: “I’m putting my best foot forward. I’ve committed to serve the people in the community in which I live.”
Taylor declined to comment, saying it was inappropriate and he was prohibited by party rules from doing so.

Barcelona 5-0 Espanyol: Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar all score as Barca thrash rivals to leave them on brink of La Liga title

  • Lionel Messi settled Nou Camp nerves when he gave Barcelona the lead with a neat free-kick after eight minutes
  • Ivan Rakitic had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside when he turned in Messi's shot from close range
  • Luis Suarez doubled Barca's lead seven minutes into the second half when he finished off a fine move
  • Suarez secured the three points with his second of the game on the hour mark, heading in Neymar's corner
  • Substitute Rafinha capitalises on dreadful mistake from Espanyol keeper Pau Lopez to add a fourth
  • Neymar added a fifth goal to rub salt into Espanyol's wounds, turning Suarez's cross into an empty goal
Suarez has certainly made up for the heartbreak of missing out on the Premier League with Liverpool two seasons ago. He won La Liga in his first season, and his 37 league goals this campaign have left Barça needing just three more points next week against Granada to be crowned Champions.
Messi got the first with a free-kick that left Pau Lopez with no chance. The Espanyol goalkeeper had been whistled every time he touched the ball after he stamped on Messi in a Copa del Rey game in January; the Nou Camp does not forget such things.

Messi took revenge in his own inimitable style, flashing a free-kick from the edge of the area past the Espanyol goalkeeper. It was his 26th goal in the league and his fourth free-kick goal of the season – no one has done that since Ronaldinho in the 2006-07 season.
It was nearly 2-0 when Pau Lopez saved Suarez's shot and Messi thumped the rebound in off of Ivan Rakitic. The goal was chalked out after the flag was raised for offside but with two Espanyol players down and appearing to play Barca’s goal on, it looked a harsh call.
Barcelona were in showboating mood in the next ten minutes with flicks, tricks and one ‘rabona’ cross from Neymyar as they turned on the style but they needed a second goal and it did not come.
Messi was running the game from his right-wing starting position. One of his passes seemed be curling out of play but bounced just inside the line and screwed back to the on-running Rakitic. It was all great to watch but Espanyol were a threat on the break.

Felipe Caicedo turned Gerard Pique and shot straight at Marc Andre ter Stegen and the German keeper then dropped a Victor Alvarez’ header.
With Levante cancelling out Fernando Torres’s opening goal for Atletico Madrid, the title appeared to be even closer but there was no reaction from the Nou Camp suggesting either a lack of transistor radios and social media updates, or just extreme confidence in Barcelona not relying on results elsewhere.
There was a reaction when Messi appeared to be tripped by Ruben Duarte inside the area. Espanyol had closed the half doing their best to kick and provoke the home side and moments later Duarte was booked for upending Rakitic.
The bad blood between these two teams goes beyond that stamp on Messi. In three games played in quick succession at the start of the year there was also a huge Espanyol banner offending Pique’s girlfriend Shakira – for which they were fined by the league – and a ban for Luis Suarez who allegedly waited for Espanyol players at the door of the dressing rooms calling them ‘garbage’.

Suarez had still not scored against Espanyol since joining Barcelona but he put that right on 52 minutes. Alves won the ball high up the pitch and prodded it to Messi. He played it through to Suarez and with very little fuss the Uruguayan dispatched his 300th career goal.
Messi and Suarez’ combination almost brought an immediate third but Pau Lopez came quickly off his line. The second goal had done for Espanyol. They were lackluster now and Suarez did not need to leave the deck as he powered a header past Pau Lopez for the third from Neymar’s corner.
Rafinha got the fourth after the Espanyol keeper spilled a soft shot straight into his path. And Suarez then ran on to Rafinha's flick and crossed for Neymar at the back post allowing the Brazilian to roll-in the fifth.
It had been an easy final home win of the season. The campaign itself has been anything but easy and it is fitting that it will go to the wire – albeit with Barca still one step ahead of the rest.

CANADA: What is the damage? Help from Ottawa: .... to match donations......

What is the damage?
An estimated 1,600 structures have burned in Fort McMurray. There were no updates to that figure as of Sunday morning, with authorities saying that fire officials did not have time to make that assessment.
But officials have said that, even though the fire has largely pushed through Fort McMurray, the town is still too dangerous to enter. The city’s gas has been turned off, its power grid is damaged, and the water is undrinkable. Provincial officials said displaced people would be better off driving to cities such as Calgary, where health and social services were better.
The first images from inside the Fort McMurray neighbourhood of Beacon Hill show the damage and devastation from wildfires that rolled through the city earlier this week. .
