Arsenal 1-0 Norwich: Danny Welbeck eases the pressure on Arsene Wenger and strengthens Gunners' hold on a Champions League spot as relegation fears mount for Canaries at Emirates Stadium

  • Arsenal scored with their first shot on target as substitute Danny Welbeck broke the deadlock against Norwich
  • John Ruddy denied Mohamed Elneny from doubling lead with fine save tipping midfielder's effort over the crossbar
  • Gunners midfielder Mesut Ozil was booked and appeared to brush into referee Mike Jones in the closing stages
  • Norwich have now won only one of the last 15 Premier League matches against Arsenal (drawn 6, lost 8)
But that is where we are with Arsenal at the moment; a club split by the man who has no intention of budging.
Saturday's 12th and 78th-minute protests — signifying the club's 12-year title drought — against the Arsenal manager only served to increase the confusion. Those intent on sounding off about the Frenchman were drowned out by those who remain loyal to their manager.
Danny Welbeck had been on the pitch only a few minutes when the Arsenal forward broke the deadlock with a firm low shot into the net

In the end Wenger rose to the challenge. His match-winning substitution, introducing goalscorer Danny Welbeck, kept their top-four aspirations in tact. On a day where the club faced an embarrassing supporter backlash, the Arsenal manager came up with a response. A telling response, at that.
But the performance will have done little to placate fans who believe Wenger should go. This was drab as drab gets from Arsenal. But when they needed inspiration, Wenger provided it. Some fans simply do not trust Wenger any more. On this evidence, perhaps they should.
'I have given my best for this club and I have to accept the judgement of people,' said Wenger
'I cannot keep 100 per cent of the people happy. It was a strange atmosphere but we have to live with that. Overall some fans were protesting but the majority didn't and the big majority were behind the team and showed they appreciate what I have done.'
If Wenger thinks he has got problems, then he should spare a thought for Norwich manager Alex Neil. Saturday's loss pushed them further into the relegation mire.
Nevertheless, the Scot believes his side have got the minerals to stay up 'We have three cup finals now but it was going to be the case regardless [of Saturday's result],' he said. 'There's nothing between the three clubs involved. We need to pick up points but I'm confident and my players are confident.'
Indeed, Norwich's start at the Emirates Stadium indicated they could yet pull off an escape act. Petr Cech stopped Nathan Redmond's firm effort in the sixth minute, before Cameron Jerome squandered a half chance from deep inside the area following some slack Arsenal defending.

It was hardly the start Wenger wanted ahead of that pre-planned 12th-minute protest. When it did arrive, ironically it mirrored Arsenal's season; promising, full of early intent — but in the end a damp squib.
Indeed, the chants of 'One Arsene Wenger' that followed were, perhaps, more significant.
Wenger, who acknowledged the fans, is adamant that the vast majority want him to stay, that the idea of a mass supporter revolt is a myth conjured by social media. On this evidence, the Arsenal manager is spot on.
His players, however, were toiling. Arsenal failed to force Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy into a single save in the first half. Had Redmond and Gary O'Neil been more clinical then the Gunners would have been behind at the break.

In short, Arsenal were toothless, lacking creativity. How often have we said that during Wenger's reign?
Wenger certainly hoped the Gunners could only get better, with another protest planned for the 78th minute [another 12-minute significance, being the amount of time until the end of the match].
But they were struck by an injury blow early in the second half, Per Mertesacker limping off with a suspected hamstring injury to be replaced by Gabriel.
Again, Arsenal dominated the ball. Again, however, they were not doing anything with it. So at this point, Wenger had seen enough and on came Welbeck for Alex Iwobi in the 55th minute.
The home fans did not agree, however, believing that Olivier Giroud — who had been ineffective up to then — should have been replaced instead.

Ye of little faith. Arsenal took a 59th-minute lead with their first shot on target. Welbeck scored it, firing home from 12 yards. Guess who set him up? That's right, Giroud. On a day his reign was under the spotlight more than ever, Wenger came up with the goods.
Norwich kept plugging away, Gabriel making an excellent last-ditch 70th-minute challenge to deny Dieumerci Mbokani.
Had Alexis Sanchez — who stormed off the pitch having been substituted — and Mesut Ozil not been denied by Ruddy, then Arsenal would have been home and hosed.
For Norwich, relegation now looks more probable than possible. And all because Wenger won the game for his team. Some Arsenal fans will do well to remember that.

Champions.-Real Betis 0-2 Barcelona: Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez net in second-half to give visitors win that returns them top of La Liga

Real Betis 0-2 Barcelona: Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez net in second-half to give visitors win that returns them top of La Liga

  • Luis Suarez calmly finished when one-on-one to double Barcelona's lead and send them back to the top of La Liga
  • Ivan Rakitic earlier put visitors in front just after the break following miscommunication in the Real Betis defence
  • Home side were reduced to 10-men in the first-half when Heiko Westermann was shown red for two bookings
For 35 minutes they were frustrated by the home team whose supporters taunted the faltering leaders with chants of ‘Atletico Madrid’. Diego Simeone’s side were top when this game kicked off after beating Rayo Vallecano but once again find themselves trailing Barça on head-to-head goal difference, now with two games left to play.
Luis Enrique’s side had two gifts fall into their laps in the space of ten minutes. The first was a clumsy challenge from Heiko Westermann earning him a red card, and the second a howler from former Real Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan who had promised to do his old team a favour in midweek by as he put it: ‘f****** the league for Barça’. He had instead helped secure them three precious points. He should not take all the blame, defender Germán Pezzella was equally culpable for what was a comical goal.

Luis Suarez made sure of the victory with his ninth goal in the league in three games. He now has 35 in La Liga, 54 in all competitions, and the strike meant the Suarez, Messi and Neymar front three have now beaten last season’s 122 goals tally. They have scored 123 this season but would have dried up almost completely were it not for the Uruguayan.
It was that first half red that changed things though. Westermann, who had already been booked, clumsily chopped down Ivan Rakitic leaving the referee Mateu Lahoz no choice but to reach into his pocket and send him off.

Gift number two was even more important and rather than fall into Barcelona’s lap it fell at Rakitc’s feet. On minute 50 Messi lofted a pass into the area which Betis should have cleared without a problem. Instead both defender Pezzella and goalkeeper Adan launched themselves at the ball, passing each other in midair – neither making contact with it, and allowing it to fall perfectly to Rakitic to finish into the empty net.
There were huge sighs of relief from Barcelona supporters and groans from the capital as the Madrid teams found themselves second and third in the league once more.
The first half had promised the chasing pair so much. Barcelona had been flat. They were more 3-4-3 than ever with Sergio Busquets between Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano and full-backs Dani Alves and Jordi Alba pushed on as wingers but they could not get around the back of Betis. For so long this season they have quick-stepped past opponents – this was a slow waltz in front of the Betis defence.
Jordi Alba shot wildly goalwards instead of trying to find Suarez with one early chance. Andres Iniesta shot well wide squandering another opportunity and Neymar headed a deep Alves cross far from the target.
With Barça’s title hopes heading south, Westermann got his marching orders and the game changed. Two assists from Messi and goals from Rakitic and Suarez sealed the points. They now face neighbours Espanyol in a local derby in their last home game of the season next week.
Espanyol have been awful this season but tend to save their best performances for their local rivals and unless Barcelona can dig deep again and find some of that early season inspiration this marathon title race is still not over yet.

Real Sociedad 0-1 Real Madrid: Gareth Bale.

Real Sociedad 0-1 Real Madrid: Gareth Bale steps up in Cristiano Ronaldo's absence to set pace in La Liga title race

  • Gareth Bale rose to head home from Lucas Vazquez's cross in the 80th minute to keep title dream alive
  • Welshman Bale now has 19 goals for the season, all of them coming in La Liga matches
  • Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema were not risked ahead of Champions League semi-final decider
Is there a better header of the ball in Europe at the moment than Gareth Bale? The statistics say no after his ninth headed goal this season kept Real Madrid in the Spanish title race for another week.
Once again it was Bale who earned Real Madrid the three points – leading from the front in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. It seems the only thing that Ronaldo does that Bale cannot do is stay fit, and even that has changed in the last week.
Asked if the only thing Bale was lacking in comparison to Ronaldo was that ability to play so many games a season Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane said: ‘He can do everything that Ronaldo can do. When you see a player like Bale score a goal as important as this one then that bodes very well for Wednesday.

He now has 19 goals for the season. All of them have come in the league and with nine no-one has scored more headers.
Real Madrid will hope that with or without Ronaldo on Wednesday against Manchester City, Bale will be able to get off the mark in the Champions League and send the Spanish side into the European Cup final.
His goal came with just 10 minutes left as Real Madrid seemed to be starring down the barrel of title-race exit.
They had thrown everything at Real Sociedad’s 23-year-old keeper Geronimo Rulli but he had batted away chance after chance putting in the kind of Boy’s Own performance that wins games or at least earns draws against the big teams.
It was his brilliant 90 minutes that helped Real Sociedad beat Barcelona at the start of the month – the result that blew this La Liga title race wide open. But Rulli was not to be the hero, that was left to Bale who rose above the hosts' defence to head in Lucas Vazquez cross on 80 minutes.
He sprinted across to the bench where he was mobbed by manager Zinedine Zidane and an ensemble of technical staff, substitutes and team-mates.
Madrid held on for what was left of the game and are still clinging to the chance that they can overhaul Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
For So long Rulli looked like having the last word. James was the first to test him but the Argentine blocked his effort. Bale then headed James Rodriguez’ cross just wide as Madrid applied all the early pressure.
Bale’s Rory Delap style throws have also suddenly become a weapon for Madrid under Zidane and one long one set up James for another Madrid chance that was not taken.

James looked uncomfortable as he walked off at half-time. The last thing Zidane needed was another injury with Benzema and Ronaldo both struggling to make Wednesday’s second leg.
The Colombian did come out for the second period although gave the ball away carelessly just infront of Zidane.
The coming together of the talented midfielder and the French playing legend has really not been the marriage made in heaven many thought it would be and even if fit it seems unlikely James will start on Wednesday.
As in the first half Bale was taking the fight to Real Sociedad and he had victory at his feet on 50 minutes when a cross from the left was cleared straight to him eight yards out. He went for power and Rulli blocked it leaving Bale on his knees in despair. Would that be the last chance?
Bale could then have released Lucas Vazquez clean through but his pass was intercepted and Zidane responded to the failure to make a breakthrough by taking off 19-year-old Borja Mayoral and throwing on Jese.
Isco was then hurried back along the touchline to the bench so he could change and come on too. Madrid were getting increasingly desperate but Rulli continued to save everything that came his way.
Everything until that late late Bale header.
