Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich. Champions League semi-final

Bayern Munich are the most complete side... we're treating this as a final, says Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez

  • Atletico Madrid face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final
  • It is the fifth season in a row that Bayern have reached the semi-final stage
  • Saul Niguez has scored eight goals from midfield for Atletico this season

  • Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez says he and his team-mates will 'fight to the death' when they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
The two teams have been drawn together in the semi-finals of the competition with Atletico hosting the first leg on Wednesday night.
This is the fifth consecutive season that Bayern have reached this stage in Europe - but they have failed to go any further in the previous two.

The German giants have impressed in the Champions League so far this campaign.
And Bayern's form, leaves Niguez under no illusions of the enormity of Atletico's task who will treat the semi-final like a 'final'.
'They [Bayern] are the most complete side, they have a lot of variety to their game and can attack through the middle or via the wings, and they're strong in the air,' he told AS.
'We will do what we always do; work as a team, fight to the death for every ball, treat the game as though it was a final, that's only way we will be able to compete against a top side like Bayern.
'The main objective is to win the game.'
The 21-year-old has scored eight goals from midfield in all competitions for Diego Simeone's side this season.

Manchester City 0-0 Real Madrid: Joe Hart denies Pepe with super late save as Champions League semi-final first leg ends goalless

  • Cristiano Ronaldo was forced to watch from the stands after failing a late fitness test ahead of the match
  • David Silva was replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho in the 40th minute after appearing to tweak a hamstring
  • Jese hit the bar for Real Madrid, while Joe Hart was in fine form to deny both Pepe and Casemiro late on
  • Gareth Bale had a penalty appeal turned down as Manuel Pellegrini's side held on at the Etihad Stadium
  • Second leg of the Champions League semi-final take place at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 4

  • No Cristiano Ronaldo, no Karim Benzema, but no end to the stalemate for Manchester City. The only thing tighter than this game was Zinedine Zidane's trousers, which he split for the second time this season, apparently.
At least someone got excited then. Manchester City and Real Madrid otherwise played out one of those games that purists claim is like a chess match. Indeed it was. A lousy chess match. One that ends in a stupefying stalemate.
Real Madrid came the closest to scoring with 20 minutes remaining when a header by substitute Jese hit the bar. That Jese was even on, however, shows the opportunity Manchester City spurned.

REMAINING FIXTURES

Ronaldo did not make it to the starting blocks, Benzema pulled out halfway – Jese his half-time replacement. Yet still Keylor Navas in the Madrid goal remained untroubled.
Sergio Aguero had a shot a minute into the second-half that flew over the bar, and that was about it. City had a lot of possession and will take great heart that Madrid did not score away from home, but the away leg will be very different if Zidane's team is at full strength.
Madrid finished much the stronger here. A corner from the right after 79 minutes picked out Brazilian defensive screen Casemiro – one of the game's outstanding players, which says something – but his header was superbly stopped by Joe Hart, with his feet, in the manner of David de Gea. A free-kick for Madrid on the edge of the area a minute later also looked dangerous but Gareth Bale blasted it tamely into the wall.
From the corner, Hart made the save of the night. The corner was headed on by Bale, it fell to Pepe in so much space he was initially presumed offside. A flag went up, then down, and in that split Hart threw himself at the ball as if smothering a grenade. He has had some magnificent games in Europe this season and here was another. Hart didn't have much to do but, what he did, proved vital.

So City have at least a puncher's chance in the Bernabeu next Wednesday. Score and Madrid will need two. So this was far from a poor result. It was, however, a missed opportunity. This was Madrid at their least potent, yet they came through with barely a scratch. City have to find a way of putting Madrid under at least as much pressure as the seat of Zidane's trousers.
The loss of David Silva is not the hammer blow it would once have been to Manchester City on Champions League nights, even so what appeared to be a hamstring tweak after 40 minutes could have a longer term effect than a single game. Silva may play no further part in City's season if the injury is as serious at it looked, and the sympathy he elicited from the away team suggested as much.
Yet if the news is bad for Silva it is possibly worse for Raheem Sterling, whose £50million transfer from Liverpool is in danger of veering into 'what-a-waste-of-money' territory on this evidence. Surely he would have been the perfect, like for like, replacement for Silva, an inventive presence coming inside from the left flank and linking up with Aguero. Apparently not.

Instead it was Kelechi Iheanacho's number that was held up – and the warm reception from the home support confirmed this was not considered a maverick call by Manuel Pellegrini. There were no moans, no exclamations of surprise. They wanted the teenager, too.
Not that Silva had any influence on the game. It was hard to name a player who did in the first-half, certainly in a creative sense. It wasn't a dull half, but it was an uneventful one.
Manchester City unable to break down a Real Madrid side that was surprisingly well-organised and content to sit in tight defensive banks; Madrid perhaps content to wait out a draw here and allow the cavalry to arrive in the form of Ronaldo in the replay.
The game missed its star turn, no doubt of that. Ronaldo's return to Manchester was the snap in the elastic and when his name was missing from the team-sheet, City fans were no doubt torn between delight at his absence, and disappointment at the loss of the spectacle.

No doubt he is a huge influence on nights like this. He has played 36 of Madrid's last 37 games in Europe, and the one time he sat out previously, his team went down 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund.
Not that Madrid are entirely shorn of threat without him – not with Bale and Benzema lurking and Luka Modric pulling the strings – but they are missing quite a lot of their fear factor. Ronaldo destroyed Wolfsburg in the previous round, and obviously could have done the same here. He sat on the sidelines, almost distracted. He plays as if starring in an A-list film, and he clearly didn't enjoy this B movie.
Madrid offered little without him, too, Hart untroubled in the first 45 minutes, Madrid's routes to goal pedestrian aside from the odd spark of invention from Modric.
The one time they tried something different was in the second minute when Bale took a very quick, un-Spanish, long throw-in on the right, catching Manchester City by surprise and winning a corner. It was a sliver of Premier League spirit exported to Madrid, but much of the rest was one-paced.

Not that City dazzled. Kevin De Bruyne is the key to it these days and he saw plenty of the ball but to little effect. In the 23rd minute, he found Aguero who completed a neat turn to take up a good position, but Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas read it well, and kicked clear.
A minute later Pepe was rightly booked for a spectacularly late and rash challenge on De Bruyne, and howls of outrage greeted a lunge by Sergio Ramos that took out Fernandinho soon after. He certainly made contact on his follow through, but replays showed he had taken the ball cleanly first and referee Cuneyt Cakir was right to take no further action against the player.
It wasn't a dirty game although, before his disappearance, Silva did manage to get booked for a needless foul on Bale. Like the game in the first-half at least, he wasn't really going anywhere at the time.

Labour in fresh anti-Semitic storm: Muslim MP quits as aide to John McDonnell after sharing toxic Facebook post which suggested Israel should be moved to US

  • Naz Shah today apologised for 'offence caused' by her Facebook post
  • The Bradford West MP shared the claim and added supportive comments
  • The post was made in 2014 before Ms Shah became an MP in the Commons
  • Labour has been rocked by a series of anti-Semitism rows in recent weeks
  • Jeremy Corbyn repeatedly urged to speak out clearly against abuse
Bradford West MP Naz Shah shared an image that showed an outline of Israel superimposed on to a map of the USA.
The headline on the image said: 'Solution for Israel-Palestine Conflict - Relocate Israel into United States.'
Ms Shah then wrote with the post: 'problem solved.'
The Muslim MP today apologised for 'offence caused' before quitting as the shadow chancellor's PPS.
The resignation will reignite a bitter row within Labour about whether Jeremy Corbyn has done enough to combat anti-Semitism among some new members who have joined the party under his leadership.
Tory MPs today led calls for Ms Shah to be suspended from the Labour Party over the incident.
The Facebook post, shared by Ms Shah in 2014 before she became an MP, suggested the US has 'plenty of land' to accommodate Israel as a 51st state, allowing Palestinians to 'get their life and their land back'.
It added that Israeli people would be welcome and safe in the US while the 'transportation cost' would be less than three years' worth of Washington's support for Israeli defence spending.
Ms Shah added a note suggesting the plan might 'save them some pocket money'.
After the posting was highlighted by the Guido Fawkes website, Ms Shah released a statement in which she said: 'This post from two years ago was made before I was an MP, does not reflect my views and I apologise for any offence it has caused.
In a second statement, she added later: 'I deeply regret the hurt I have caused by comments made on social media before I was elected as an MP.
'I made these posts at the height of the Gaza conflict in 2014, when emotions were running high around the Middle East conflict. But that is no excuse for the offence I have given, for which I unreservedly apologise.
'In recognition of that offence, I have stepped down from my role as PPS to the shadow chancellor John McDonnell.
'I will be seeking to expand my existing engagement and dialogue with Jewish community organisations and will be stepping up my efforts to combat all forms of racism, including anti-Semitism.'
A Labour spokesman said the party was making no comment on the issue.
Tory MP Andrew Bridgen told the website: 'If Jeremy Corbyn was serious about tackling anti-Semitism, he would put his money where his mouth is and remove the whip her from Naz Shah immediately.'
Ms Shah is a member of the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the rise of anti-Semitism.
The graphic shared by Ms Shah
Ms Shah's Facebook message
Ms Shah shared the graphic, pictured left, in August 2014 on Facebook. She added comments underneath, pictured right, suggesting she would lobby Barack Obama and David Cameron over the idea
Jonathan Sacerdoti, director of communications at the Campaign Against Antisemitism, said it would be 'hard' for his organisation to take the parliamentary committee's inquiry seriously if Ms Shah remained part of it.
Speaking before Ms Shah's resignation, he said: 'One cannot simply apologise for ''any offence caused'' and expect a evidence of gross and brazen anti-Semitism to disappear.
'Once again the Labour Party has been revealed to have within its ranks people who express extreme prejudice towards Jewish people in their public statements. Once again the party has failed to find these statements itself, and reject those who freely and willingly express them.
'How can we believe Labour when it says it takes the problem of Jew-hatred seriously when it repeatedly defends anti-Semitic MPs? It seems that Jeremy Corbyn's anti-racism policy only operates when convenient.'
He added: 'We have offered to assist the Select Committee in its work investigating anti-Semitism. However, if Naz Shah remains on the committee it will be hard for those of us giving evidence to take the inquiry seriously.'

Ronaldo vs Aguero: It's the King against Kun as Spanish press gear up for Real Madrid's clash with Manchester City

Sergio Aguero's City face Cristiano Ronaldo's Madrid at the Etihad with Marca dubbing the clash 'El King contra El Kun' which translates into 'The King against Kun'.
However, City manager Manuel Pellegrini insists his side will have to focus beyond Ronaldo and is wary of the threat the Spanish giants pose.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City.-Watch out Manchester City! Goal-machine Ronaldo is back in town to show

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is back in Manchester to take on City at the Etihad
  • Real Madrid star has been in sensational form in the Champions League
  • The former Manchester United star will look to get one over on their rivals
  • Ronaldo is just seven short of reaching 100 Champions League goals
Surely there was never really any doubt about it?
Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence during their weekend win at Rayo Vallecano had sparked fears he might miss the Champions League showdown with Manchester City.
But you knew Ronaldo would have to be really, really incapacitated to miss this mouth-watering semi-final return to his old stomping ground of Manchester.

His manager, Zinedine Zidane, delivered the reassuring news with a glint in his eye; Ronaldo is ‘100 per cent’ and primed for battle.
Ronaldo isn’t a man usually in need of additional motivation, but the former Manchester United star will be doubly determined to give their rivals City a good duffing up when he plays at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night
A hero on the red side of Manchester, Ronaldo’s legend will only be enhanced if he denies City passage into a maiden Champions League final over the next eight days.
At 31, Ronaldo has been confronted by frequent and quite absurd notions that he is past it. A game without scoring raised eyebrows, a couple of barren matches is a disaster.
But how can it possibly be said that a man who has scored 47 goals this season - including 16 in the Champions League - is over the hill?

For the sake of context, his tally 16 goals in this season’s competition is double the number scored by closest challengers Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich, and Luis Suarez of Barcelona.
And, just for the record, Ronaldo has 12 more goals than Lionel Messi in Europe this season.
It equates to a quite phenomenal ratio of a goal every 56.2 minutes for the Portuguese star in the Champions League this season. The next best is Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud - whose five goals were spaced every 77.4 minutes.
Ronaldo loves a record as we well know and a goal at the Etihad would equal the 17 he scored in Real’s ultimately successful 2013-14 Champions League campaign.
He is also within striking distance of a century of goals in Europe’s elite competition. After a few years of being neck-and-neck with Messi in the all-time Champions League scoring list, Ronaldo has majestically pulled away.

The current reckoning is 93 goals for Ronaldo and 83 for his Argentine adversary. You imagine he’s going to smash the 100 mark, probably next season.
So City have been warned. Ronaldo is undoubtedly going to receive a frosty reception at the Etihad but he’s no stranger to playing the pantomime villain, indeed he often thrives on it.
And he’s caused City plenty of pain in the past, too, for both Real and Manchester United before that.
Back in September 2012, it was Ronaldo who scored a stoppage-time winner as Real beat City 3-2 in a pulsating group stage encounter.
It was a case of what might have been for Roberto Mancini’s team, who led 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining before Ronaldo made the difference as he so often does.

At United, Ronaldo came up against City 11 times and scored four times. Though this doesn’t compare too favourably with his record against other Premier League teams, there were some important interventions.
In May 2007, he held his nerve to score from the penalty spot as United won 1-0 at the Etihad and moved a step closer to their first Premier League title in four years.
Earlier that same season, Ronaldo scored and set up another for Wayne Rooney as United beat City 3-1 at Old Trafford to extend their lead at the top to nine points.
In February 2004, Ronaldo scored as United beat City 4-2 in a pulsating FA Cup fifth-round win, claiming victory despite the sending off of Gary Neville.
Ronaldo’s fourth goal against City in United colours came in a 2-0 win back in May 2009 as Sir Alex Ferguson’s team closed in on their third consecutive Premier League title. His deflected free-kick deceived City keeper Shay Given.
You sense Real would be more than happy to accept a Ronaldo goal in any form on Tuesday night.
