‘Life-threatening’ Hurricane Matthew bearing down on Haiti; likelihood of U.S. effects rising

(This article, originally posted Monday morning, was updated in the evening.)
Hurricane Matthew remains an extremely powerful Category 4 hurricane, and it is now less than a day away from producing a prolonged period of life-threatening conditions in parts of Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica. Ultimately, those conditions will extend into the Bahamas.
Some impacts along the U.S. East Coast now appear to be more likely as we look toward the weekend, although there is a large amount of uncertainty. While there is more suggestion of a coastal scrape than a landfall at this time, a U.S. landfall certainly isn’t out of the question.
Florida Governor Rick Scott has declared a State of Emergency as the state could face tropical storm or even hurricane conditions as early as Thursday depending on Matthew’s exact track.
Matthew’s maximum winds are back up to 140 mph after falling slightly overnight. It is expected to maintain that intensity until land interactions start to affect it.
Hurricane warnings are in effect for Jamaica, Haiti, eastern Cuba, and the eastern and central Bahamas. It is tracking due north at 7 mph, and that slow forward motion will unfortunately keep the high wind and heavy rain over the same areas for an extended amount of time. Some places may be battered for perhaps two days.
Although tropical storm force winds extend about 185 miles from the center, hurricane-force winds only extend out to roughly 40 miles.
If the center stays far enough from Jamaica, that nation could avoid the worst of the winds, although heavy rain is still a big concern. The storm surge along Haiti’s and Cuba’s southern coasts is predicted to be 7 to 11 feet. This is a very real danger must not be overlooked or underestimated. The rainfall forecast for Haiti is especially ominous, but eastern Jamaica and eastern Cuba are not far behind. Parts of Haiti could receive up to 40 inches of rain. This is likely to produce terrible flash floods and mudslides.
“Life-threatening rain…wind…and storm surge expected in parts of Haiti tonight,” headlined the National Hurricane Center’s 5 p.m. advisory.
Haiti has been hit or grazed by numerous very strong hurricanes over the centuries, but even weaker storms that pass nearby have produced devastating floods and mudslides.
Direct landfalls on Haiti, by major hurricanes, include David (1979), Inez (1966), Cleo (1964), Flora (1963) and Hazel (1954). Several other extremely intense storms passed very close, such as Allen (1980). Other recent natural disasters include the 2008 hurricane season when hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike all ravaged the country, and then the infamous 2010 earthquake. It currently seems unfortunately likely that Matthew will become an addition to that grim list.
Looking beyond the next three days of continuous island encounters, Matthew’s longer-range track still keeps the U.S. East Coast in play.
While prolonged full-blown hurricane conditions are unlikely in Florida, a slight westward nudge in the track could bring hurricane conditions to parts of Florida’s east coast.  The percent chance of tropical storm conditions has grown to greater  than 50-50 in the easternmost areas and the National Hurricane Center, in its 5 p.m.  update, said “direct hurricane impacts are possible.”
Hurricane or tropical storm watches may be issued for Florida’s east coast Monday night or Tuesday.
Looking further ahead to Friday and the weekend, the southeast United States, the Mid-Atlantic states and the northeast are certainly still at risk.  Even if the storm remains offshore, it could be close enough to produce storm surges and coastal erosion.
The American GFS model predicts Matthew will hug the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coast with considerable wind and rain, even as far west as the Interstate 95 corridor.
The European (ECMWF)  model, alternatively, forecasts Matthew will come uncomfortably close to the coast but remain offshore. It would bring more of a glancing blow to coastal areas.
The timing and strength of a subtropical ridge to the east of Matthew will determine if the storm will continue out to sea or if it will make landfall first and then get pushed out by the next cold front.
Matthew has now been a major hurricane for over 72 hours, and it had winds of at least 145 mph for a much of that time. CWG’s tropical analyst Phil Klotzbach points out that this is the longest we’ve had such a strong storm in the Atlantic Ocean on record:
Prior to Matthew’s formation, the season’s Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) was at approximately 70 percent of an average season for the date. As of today, the season is at about 89 percent of average for this date. ACE is a metric that takes into account both the intensity and the longevity of tropical cyclones, so a long-lived strong hurricane will make a big contribution.
With Matthew expected to continue churning for at least a week to 10 days, these ACE numbers will continue to rise. The storm’s overall toll will increase as well, as it begins to impact population in a way it has not done to this point.

Donald Trump Foundation ordered to stop fundraising by N.Y. attorney general’s office

Trump Foundation ordered to stop fundraising by N.Y. attorney general’s office

The New York attorney general disclosed Monday that it ordered Donald Trump’s personal charity to cease fundraising immediately after determining that the foundation was violating state law by soliciting donations without proper authorization.
The message was conveyed in a “notice of violation” sent Friday to the Donald J. Trump Foundation, of which Trump is president.
The night before, The Washington Post had reported that Trump’s foundation — which had subsisted entirely on other people’s donations since 2008 — had failed to register with the state as a charity soliciting funds.
Because of that, Trump’s foundation had avoided rigorous annual audits that New York state requires of charities that seek the public’s money. Those audits would have asked, among other things, if the Trump Foundation’s money had been used to benefit Trump or one of his businesses.
“The Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fundraising activities in New York,” wrote James G. Sheehan, the head of the charities bureau in the office of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman
In addition, Sheehan wrote, the Trump Foundation was ordered to supply the state with all the legal paperwork necessary to register as a charity that solicits money within 15 days.
Trump’s foundation must also look back and determine whether it violated state law in prior years by soliciting money without authorization, Sheehan wrote. If so, the foundation must provide the financial audit reports it should have provided for those years. Those reports, Sheehan said, are also due within 15 days.
If Trump’s foundation did not comply, Sheehan wrote, it would be considered “a continuing fraud upon the people of New York.”
Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks responded in written statement, “While we remain very concerned about the political motives behind AG Schneiderman’s investigation, the Trump Foundation nevertheless intends to cooperate fully with the investigation. Because this is an ongoing legal matter, the Trump Foundation will not comment further at this time.”
Schneiderman has endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton, Trump’s rival in the presidential race.
Last month, his office launched a broader probe of the Trump Foundation after stories in The Washington Post identified cases where Trump appeared to have used the charity’s money to buy portraits of himself, and to settle lawsuits involving his for-profit businesses. In addition, Trump’s foundation gave a $25,000 gift to a campaign committee supporting Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R). Nonprofits like the Trump Foundation are prohibited from giving political gifts.
Legal experts said the move to suspend the Trump Foundation’s ability to raise money was a common reaction in cases where a charity solicited funds without authorization.
“You have to register with the attorney general if you’re going to raise money from the public. And they’re not doing it. So this would happen to anybody,” said Daniel Kurtz, an attorney in private practice who previously oversaw the New York attorney general’s charities bureau.
“I think this is probably pretty close to a form letter,” Kurtz said of the notice sent to Trump’s foundation.
Trump started his foundation in 1987, to give away the proceeds of his book, “The Art of the Deal.” It has no paid employees, and a board of five: Trump, three of his children, and a longtime Trump Organization employee. They all work a half-hour per week, according to the foundation’s most recent Internal Revenue Service filing.
For years, Trump himself was the Trump Foundation’s only source of money: Between 1987 and 2006, he donated $5.4 million.
But, by the end of 2006, Trump had given away almost all the money he had put in — leaving just $4,238 in the foundation’s coffers. His giving abruptly shrank and then dried up: Trump gave $35,000 in 2007, $30,000 and then no donations at all after that, tax records show.
Instead, Trump’s name-branded charity has been sustained entirely by other people’s money. Some of those donors have not said if Trump himself solicited their gifts.
Vince and Linda McMahon, the pro-wrestling executives, gave a total of $5 million, and have declined comment. NBC Universal, which televised Trump’s reality show, “The Apprentice,” has declined to explain the reason behind its $500,000 gift in 2012.
But in other cases, there is evidence that Trump was involved in asking for the money or directing it to the Trump Foundation.
There was a $100,000 gift from Norwegian Cruise Lines in 2005, after Trump’s wife Melania served as “godmother” to a new ship. A spokeswoman for the cruise line said the Trumps helped arrange a donation to the Trump foundation, as part of that deal.
In 2011, Trump appeared on a televised “roast” on Comedy Central and directed that his $400,000 appearance fee be sent to the Trump Foundation instead.
Trump’s foundation has also received about $1.9 million from a New York businessman named Richard Ebers, who sells high-end tickets and once-in-a-lifetime experiences to wealthy clients. Two people familiar with that arrangement said that Ebers owed Trump, for goods and services he had purchased — and was instructed to pay Trump’s foundation instead.
The Trump Foundation made its most wide-ranging request for donations earlier this year. In the wake of a fundraiser that Trump held for veterans in Iowa, the Trump Foundation set up a public website, donaldtrumpforvets.com. It took donations via credit card, which Trump said would be passed on to veterans’ groups.
Under New York law, Trump’s foundation was supposed to obtain a special registration before it solicited gifts from the public. And the law’s definition of “solicit” was quite broad: “to directly or indirectly make a request for a contribution, whether express or implied, through any medium.”
The state required that any charity that solicited $25,000 or more per year in New York to register under a provision called “7A,” for its article heading.
The most significant consequence, for a charity of Trump’s size, would have been a requirement that the charity submit to an annual audit by outside accountants. Trump’s charity never did.
Trump’s campaign has not said anything about why. Earlier this fall, Trump had implied that he had trusted lawyers to run the foundation properly.
“Well, I hope so,” Trump said, when asked if the foundation had followed the law. “I mean, my lawyers do it.”
But the Trump Foundation has reported spending very little on legal fees — at least, prior to this year. Between 1990 and 2014, the most recent year for which tax records are available, the foundation spent a total of $211 on lawyers.

John Lennon’s son Sean lashes out against ‘snobs’ hating on mom Yoko Ono for meeting Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Imagine all the famous people sharing all the world.
John Lennon's son Sean defended Yoko Ono in a lengthy Facebook rant after haters took over his page on Tuesday, slamming his mother Ono for meeting and taking a photo with reality TV star Kim Kardashian.
Ono and Kardashian posed for a photo backstage at Kanye West's Saint Pablo Tour at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday — and what seemed to be a nice photo of the two ladies quickly ignited hate from social media users who felt Ono should not associate herself with "attention seeker" Kim and "shameless" Kanye.
"Wow I didn't realize how many snobs were on my page," Lennon said in the vulgar rant, directly replying to commenters.

"Kimye invited us to a concert. We attended. We met backstage. I took a photo. They were very nice to my mother making sure she had escorts in and out of MSG. I like people who are nice to my mother."
The son of the late "Imagine" singer continued his rant in defense of the kind actions carried out by Kim and husband Kanye.
"You guys think you're so f---ing great?" Lennon wrote.

"I bet none of you would say no to a photo with a nice lady who invited you to her husband's concert. You think Kanye is an a--hole? Well he is a big fan of mom's knows a lot about her performance art. He was certainly more respectful to her than many of you are to me and my family," the 40-year-old continued.

This isn't the first time the late Beatles’ son complimented Kanye. In June 2015, Lennon told the publication Humanity that he was a fan of West.
"Kanye often seems silly," he said. "But I think he is a real artist and I do like his music."

Kim Kardashian's Paris robbery is too good to be true

There's a reason why half the world doesn't believe that armed gunmen stormed into Kim Kardashian's super-secure Paris lair on Sunday night and made off with $10 million in jewels.
Because it's too good to be true.
Here's what we know: Kim Kardashian claims that five masked men stormed into her room, tied her up at gunpoint, threatened to kill her before she begged for her life, and then stole more than $10 million in jewels before fleeing on bikes. She then somehow broke free of her bondage and called her husband Kanye West, possibly while he was onstage at a concert in Queens, prompting him to abruptly cancel the remainder of the show. He returned to Manhattan to wait out the storm.

Wow! It's a made for TV story. And won't it be amazing when it airs when "Keeping up with the Kardashians" returns (wouldn't you know) on Oct. 23!

The entire story so far is based on an unnamed Kardashian "rep" and paraphrased synopses from French authorities. But here's the problem: when it comes to the Kardashians, the media simply can't keep up. Indeed, our normal skepticism and usual methods for checking basic facts disappear.
If this happened in New York, the police commissioner, the mayor and the Manhattan DA would have had three press conferences and surveillance shots of the alleged men would have already been transmitted to every phone in the country. And the city's papers would be rushing to beat each other with scoops.
Kim K held up at gunpoint in Paris; Kanye halts Queens concert
News flash: Paris is exactly like New York (except with better croissants). So why are its media and authorities so slow on this story?
Because something's not right. This doesn't feel like a heist. It feels like a plot twist for a season premiere. Why did West stop his concert mid-rap, citing a "family emergency," yet not rush to Paris to be with his distraught wife?
Why did Kim leave the City of Light mere hours after she was supposedly interviewed by Paris cops?
Where is the concierge who was accosted by the gunmen before giving them access to the Kardashian aerie? And who is he or she?

Where are the surveillance pictures?
What kind of thieves flee on bikes?
No wonder former Kimye bodyguard Steve Stanulis, an ex-cop, told my colleague Brian Niemietz that "it wouldn't surprise me" if the story is partly a hoax.
"If it is true," he added, "someone should tell Kim not to go on Snapchat telling everyone where you're going and what you're going to wear."

The latest incident comes days after some other shockingly bad Kardashian fact-checking. After Kim was allegedly assaulted by red-carpet predator Vitalii Sediuk, there were many reports that Kim would file a complaint against Sediuk with Paris authorities. But all the reports were unsubstantiated: indeed, Kardashian has not filed such a complaint.
Remember, this is a family that will stoop as low as it can for high ratings. Never forget: this clan took a person's struggle with gender identity from the private setting in which it belongs and turned it into a TV show.
So forgive me if I'm skeptical until someone gives me solid information. And by "someone," I don't mean Kris Jenner
